Stumbling across the artwork of Spacecheese by Jennifer Vilchiz is an visual euphoria for your eyes and soul. Her use of bright vibrant colours and psychedelic imagery is stunning. Her skulls of people and animals are both so beautifully executed. With eye popping colours and spirals. The work could easily pull you into a trance. One might be inclined to try some psychedelics but one must fear that looking at her work would fold space and time. Her work would be an incredible focal point in any area.

Where are you from?

Born and raised in the city of Chicago, Illinois!! Eeeeyyyyy!!!

How did you get interested in art?

I went to an art museum in a class field trip when I was 6, I saw a woman painting a beautiful live portrait of another woman and got excited because the woman looked so realistic in the canvas! I begged my mum for some paper and crayons after!! I’ve been drawing ever since ! I established and created my own style a few years back

How would you describe your style?

Colorful,neon, psychedelic, WHOAAA!!

What do you want people to experience when they see your work?

That we as human beings are all part of something bigger, it doesn’t matter what race, religion, gender, color of your skin, sexual orientation you are, we all share the same emotions, we all have our own battles that we face and struggle with everyday. Nobody is alone ! Go forth and Love Deeply!

What does your artwork say about you?

I’m very very creative and I get excited about everything!! I love to simply have fun in life! And most of all show love and compassion towards myself, others, and life

How long does it take you to create a piece from start to finish?

It usually takes me about three weeks! Thinking about a design is the hardest part! I’ll work on a full pencil outline for the first week and then I’ll go over it entirely with microns in, add some details while that’s happening, and lastly add the color ! It takes me three weeks because I LOVE taking my time filling in ever detail and crevice in the art especially if I’m working on a mandala, you gotta take your sweet sweet time baby!

What inspires your artwork?

My love for The universe, nature, metaphysics, and Life experiences and I put them all inside a bowl and whisk it to fuse them together!

What is your favourite dinosaur?

Pterodactyls!!! And their magnificent screeches!!!

Which tools do you prefer to work with?
Acrylic, Blick studio markers, sharpies and microns! Mix media paper and wood are my fav surfaces to work on !!

What is the biggest challenge you've had to overcome with your art?

It would definitely be truly believing in myself and telling myself that everyone in this world has a unique art style and those who love your work will always love you for who you are. In this era, We tend to compare ourselves sometimes with all the amazing talented artists that probably have more years of experience creating art haha! Gosh their details can be breathtaking!! We need to take the time to acknowledge that we ourselves are amazing and talented as well too!! <3 believe in yourself and be yourself!!

What is the funniest thing someone has said about your work?

“Is this Ed hardy?”

How have you grown as an artists from when you first started to now?

I feel like I had no patience at first when creating art, I was passionate about it but I was always worried that I wasn’t posting enough. Art has definitely taught me patience and how to slow down and savor the details and go over lines, erase, add on as many times as I need to! As long as you’re happy and satisfied with the work!  It has made me grow into a better person too! It has taught me to love and trust myself during the process and to put all my heart energy into every piece ! there’s still so much to learn. You never really stop learning !

When you first started making art what were your thoughts about how it would be received?

I was afraid to be that person who stood out because my art was different and I thought no one would understand. I never really showed anyone my art growing up except a few close friends until I had the courage to turn my personal IG into an art page I was received with nothing but love! Thank you!

Do you listen to music when creating? What kind?
YES! Do you like Jazz?

What are your dreams like when you sleep?

They usually have animals in them! I like to think they are spirit animals! Sometimes I hear really good songs in my dreams and when I wake up, I realize that they don’t exist in real life.
